Ghar El Melh is a small coastal town located on the east coast of Bizerte. It is 40 km away from Bizerte and about 57 km away from Grande Tunis, which is connected to it by the national road N08 and the regional road R69. It is bordered to the north by Mount Nadhour, to the south by Lake Ghar El Melh, to the east by the sea and the lake, and to the west by the region of Aousaja. It is characterized by the beauty of natural sites (beaches and mountains) and the richness of its archaeological heritage.

The Municipality of Ghar El Melh, which had an area of 110 hectares, was created on May 3, 1967 by Decree No. 140/1967, and is one of the oldest municipalities in the Governorate of Bizerte. The expansion of the municipal area was completed in 2018 to include the regions of Bajou and Sidi Ali El Makki, with a total area of 6,161 hectares. The city is also the seat of the delegation of the same name.

The Ghar El Melh site is included in the Ramsar List, an international treaty which was adopted on February 2, 1971 for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. The area of "Qtayaa" in the east of the city covers an area of 80 hectares, it specializes in unique agricultural characteristics and is famous for growing potatoes on the shores of the lake.
